  5. I follow the BIONET-L and this was posted just the other day.  I thought
  6. that it would have utility to the info-mac community so here it is.  The
  7. chart is set up to be viewed in 80 columns with a mono-spaced font.
  8. There is also an address to ftp the most recent copy.  I did not compact/
  9. stuff/hqx this file since it is text to begin with.  (has anyone noticed
  10. that hqx will eliminate most of the 'stuffing' - size wise?)

  23. DECODING THIS CHART: This chart has been compacted to fit into 80 columns
  24. so it can be viewed on-line. The first column is the name of the compression/
  25. archiving technique. The next field is the file extension given to the
  26. resulting file. After that are 5 columns each for a different operating system.
  27. Each one of these consists of the name of the file/program to undo the given
  28. compression/archiving style and a letter that tells where the file/program may
  29. be obtained. All symbols and letters are decoded at the bottom portion of this
  30. file.

  280. JPEG - source (Free code) is available in
  281. uunet.uu.net:/graphics/jpeg/jpegsrc.v2.tar.Z.  Supports conversion
  282. between JPEG "JFIF" format and image files in PBMPLUS PPM, Utah RLE,

  287. Some uuencode/uudecode programs are able to read xxencode files.

  289. VMARC, available with the command "TELL LISTSERV AT RPIECS GET VMARC
  290. PACKAGE" from a CMS machine, will decode any CMS terse program.  The
  291. PC version of terse is a commercial program available from IBM
  292. directly.

  294. There is a portable 'ZIP' that goes along with unzip41 that is
  295. available from valeria.cs.ucla.edu:/pub/zip10ex.zip.  'ship' is also
  296. available in that same package.  It is a program like uuencode, but
  297. is more robust.

  299. There is a set of translators that will allow Stuffit Deluxe to read
  300. btoa, UUencoded files, zip, pack, tar, MacBinary, and others.  They are in
  301. sumex-aim.stanford.edu:/info-mac/utils/stuffit-deluxe-translators.hqx.

  303. When using tar.exe for PC's, the order of option flags is important.
  304. For extraction, use tar -tvf <filename>.
  305.  
  306. ARC : From SEA, ARC 6.02 is the latest widespread shareware release.
  307.       It is available at A (ux1.cso.uiuc.edu).
  308.       Also, SEA has ARC 7.00, but it is commercial, not shareware.
  309.  
  310. When using binscii.exe for an Apple II, there are different file extensions
  311. depending on the type of file being changed.
  312.  
  313. BinHexed files (with the extension .hqx) can be UnBinHexed with BinHex 4.0 or
  314. Stuffit.  BinHex5.0 format is a MacBinary format, while BinHex 4.0 files
  315. are ASCII format.
  316.  
  317. The files listed are only guaranteed to uncompress/unarchive.
  318. To make a compression/archive, further software may be needed.

  320. USAGE NOTES:
  321.  
  322. There are certain "standard" combinations of compression used:
  323.   unix - .tar.Z
  324.          (often this will be .taz for PC's)
  325.   unix - tar.Z.btoa (abbrev. to .TZB sometimes) (aka "tarmail")
  326.  
  327.   mac  - .sit.hqx
  328.        - these must be undone in order starting at the end of the name
  329.  
  330. Sometimes an archive may be self-extracting. These will look like normal
  331. executable programs. Simply run them to undo the archive.
  332.  
  333. LZEXE (PC), PKLITE(PC), Imploder(Amiga), and PowerPacker(Amiga)
  334. are executable compressors.
  335. They compress an executable file and attach an uncompressing header so that
  336. the file can still be executed while in compressed form.
  337. The listed programs for these utilities compress files, in order to uncompress
  338. a file with these types of compression, just execute them.
  339.  
  340. DIET (PC) is a TSR program that compresses and decompresses both
  341. executables and data files as needed.
